چکیده

Mountain forests, treeline ecotones included, provide numerous ecosystem services. However, different drivers heavily impact the treeline areas, in particular anthropogenic pressure and climate change. Any change affecting the aboveground portion of terrestrial ecosystems automatically influences their belowground part, i.e. soil and soil organisms. Therefore, the focus of the present paper is on the soil resource that provides multiple ecosystem services, such as carbon storage, water filtration, food and biomass provisioning, biodiversity, maintenance, etc. Soil physical, chemical, and biological properties can be very helpful as indicators of ecosystem services in mountain regions. A selection and integration of appropriate indicators of soil quality is thus needed for soil monitoring and assessment in treeline areas. In this paper, results of case studies from mountain regions in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Romania, and Slovakia are presented. From these studies, it emerges that soil organic matter (content and quality), pH, and microbial parameters show significant changes in response to anthropogenic pressures and/or climate change. These indicators of soil quality, either in the shortor in the long-term, can thus be used as reliable and sensitive tools for monitoring actions. However, it is advisable to integrate this basic set with additional indicators that can be further selected in relation to specific conditions, such as geographical area, lithological substrate, land use, and management practices.

Treeline Biogeochemistry and Dynamics, Noatak National Preserve, Northwestern Alaska

The extensive boreal biome is little studied relative to its global importance. Its high soil moisture and low temperatures result in large below-ground reservoirs of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Presently, such high-latitude ecosystems are undergoing the largest temperature increases in global warming. Change in soil temperature or moisture in the large pools of soil organic matter could funda...

Climate‐related changes of soil characteristics affect bacterial community composition and function of high altitude and latitude lakes

Lakes at high altitude and latitude are typically unproductive ecosystems where external factors outweigh the relative importance of in-lake processes, making them ideal sentinels of climate change. Climate change is inducing upward vegetation shifts at high altitude and latitude regions that translate into changes in the pools of soil organic matter. Upon mobilization, this allochthonous organ...

Spatio-temporal perspectives on aquatic carbon dynamics and limnoecological change in climate-sensitive lakes

Northern lakes are displaying widespread ecological reorganizations in response to global change. These sensitive freshwater ecosystems are an integral component of subarctic and arctic landscapes and play a critical role in regional and global biogeochemical cycles. A myriad of direct and indirect climate drivers shape their structure and functioning, often matched by equally diverse ecosystem...

Climate change Effects of Surface soil temperature profile in Ahwaz

In arid and semi-arid regions, soil surface warming is a considerable phenomenon causing a high thermal gradient which makes water flow intensely. The degree of soil temperature is effective on crop production, plant growth and soil microorganisms. In recent years, the ascending trend of temperature has been substantially noticed by researchers in the issues of pointwise climate change and at w...

Consequences of treeline shifts for the diversity and function of high altitude ecosystems

Recent and historical changes in species distributions in response to environmental change are well documented in the scientific literature. In recent decades, investigation of the impact of current changes in climate has been a major focus in biogeographical studies (Parmesan, 2006; Parmesan and Yohe, 2003; Walther, 2003). Climate conditions play an important role in determining the limits to ...
